Steve Giroux

As a self-employed sign painter, my father continued the tradition of sign painting learned from my grandfather, who had started his Burlington-based business in the early 1920’s. In the late 1950's my father added screen printing.

Growing up in a family of 10 children, I was fortunate to work in my father’s studio learning the art of screen printing as a child, cutting and peeling stencils and helping my older brothers in the printing process, mostly as a racker – not the most cherished job.

In 1978, I began an apprenticeship with my father to learn the art of hand-lettered signs, the more refined aspects of screen printing, and shortly thereafter was able to purchase the business to carry on the tradition of my family in the Burlington area, specializing mostly in screen printing graphics and design work. In 1993, in need of a change, I sold my sign and screen printing business to pursue a teaching career.

From 1995-2005 my career change led me to the Hartford School District, most recently as a 5th Grade teacher at the Ottauquechee School in Quechee, Vermont.

In the summer of 2005, I made a choice to return to my roots as a screen printer with the opening of my business, Third Generation Design, in The “Firehouse at Windsor” located at 147 Main Street.

As far back as I can remember, I have wanted to combine my love of photography with my knowledge of screen printing to produce serigraphs.

I try to choose my subjects based on their simplicity and appeal to my senses. Generally, whatever makes a good first impression is what I like to choose as subject matter. For me, screen printing is a simple, yet powerful way to convey an image in rich, vibrant colors.
